Got into jpop out of anime as a child. Was well into the jpop/jrock scene around age 14 when I discovered kpop on an extended cable channel with a Korean music video countdown. "Nabi" ('Butterfly') by Park Ki Young was one of the first Korean songs I discovered; amazing and underrated artist.

I also got into K-Pop thanks to Super Junior's Sorry Sorry, haha. It was quite popular in the Philippines around 2009. I kept seeing it on a local music channel. It wasn't that far from J-Music, which I was a fan of at the time, and the guys were really good looking too, haha. I learned about Girls Generation shortly after that and I started checking out KPOP since then. I didn't become an official KPOP fan until 2011 though, when Super Junior released Mr. Simple (and Heenim had to leave for military service ã… ã… ).

@jetr0cks it's so amusing to me that several people got into k-pop through Super Junior; they're basically my main group now (as you may deduce from my MAL username), but they're most certainly not the first Korean group/artist I heard; I think I didn't see "Sorry Sorry" until a year or two after I was first exposed to Korean music. Nonetheless they have made quite the impression and are going strong now for over 10 years! ^^
Another song among the first Korean songs I discovered around 10 years ago below; the artist is WAX , and the song title I believe is "Don't Judge" or "Don't Curse" (if anyone who can read Hangul can confirm or correct me, it would be greatly appreciated!) ^^

^yes, the Korean title translates to please don't curse/don't swear (at me).

What I find interesting is that the people who have posted in here so far are those who discovered K-Pop before it became mainstream, though in my case, I started listening to K-Pop just as it was getting popular outside Korea.

Here's one of the videos I used to watch a lot when I was still new to K-Pop. I think it's also the first K-Pop dance I learned!

I'd say for me I first really got into kpop sometime around 2008-2009. I was spending the day scrolling through YouTube videos until I discovered this song..

Boa has been around for quite some time. I remember hearing her music once or twice early on in my kpop obsession, but I never really caught onto her style. Still, her choreo is unarguably impressive. She has a lot of talent.

I always enjoy finding connections between the jpop and kpop worlds since I first got into kpop by migrating from jpop. I remember finding this video some 5 years ago and being so surprised; The Gospellers are not even well known among those who listen to jpop, but they were one of the first Japanese groups I was exposed to outside of anime (they're actually classified as an acapella group, or rather vocal based group of older guys).

Pretty much the same for me. Except I didn't stan SuJu right away. I got into SHINee when they released Lucifer but I was already an ocassional Kpop listener in 2009. I started stanning a group in 2010. But during SHINee's world tour I started checking out other groups that were popular at that time, but I mostly decided to focus more on SuJu that time and some SM artists. And the rest is history . . .

I'm one of those people who jumped onto the kpop train after Gangnam Style became really popular. Better late than never though, right? I started out with SHINee, Super Junior, etc., but it wasn't until I watched the MV for U-KISS's Neverland that I really became hooked (that song is too catchy). Then by the time I discovered my ultimate group VIXX, I was completely sold. :D

I was first introduced to k-pop when i was about 10 ,by my friend, 6 years ago, she showed me Magic Girl by Orange Caramel. I loved it and thought it was super kawaii, but I ended up putting k-pop away to the side until recently last year when I began to get into EXO,BTS, Big Bang and all that jazz.

Guess i'm reviving the thread, just wanted to share my experience hehe. I actually first heard a kpop song was when wonder girls hit song "nobody" played on the radio and everywhere else in sweden so i was hooked to that then after that i would know about bigbang (my fave song from them is haru haru and still is today) but i never thought that kpop was a genre of itself cause i was never into music and such back then, i was afterall as like the rest of my class we where sports fanatics played all kinds of sports and excelled at it. then my summertrip back to my home country, vietnam, and spending the summer with my grandparents and every night they would watch series known as "boys over flowers" aka a kdrama series which had the songs "because i'm stupid" and "stand by me". then after that me and my sis got forever hooked.

Soooo I started with K-Pop way back in 2010 (good old days LMAO). I can't remember if it was SHINee - Ring Ding Dong or Super Junior - Mr. Simple -> one of those two songs were my first K-Pop Songs I ever heard (cuz of YouTube - I am an editor and many edited with those songs back than).
Then I listened only like about 10-16 songs until last year September I guess. ALL MUTSUKII'S FAULT. IDK HOW BUT I GOT INTO GOT7 THEN BTS THEN MONSTA X AND THEN WE STARTED DOING MORE GROUPS AND MORE AND I FOUND THE LUV OF MY LIFE i know I will never meet him or something lmao i cry I DUNNO WHY I LUV KPOP SO MUCH NOW like back then before I started stanning those dudes and dudines I was like - " YE YE GOOD SONG, know listen to other songs cuz I don't understand anything" AND NOW I ALMOST ONLY listen to K-Pop
I cry help :(

Good story of how I got into K-Pop

My story starts from 2013 i guess (?)
In 2013 I was super addicted to anime and i was listening to music on youtube, and suddenly I got to the Lee Hi's Rose MV AND I THOUGHT THAT IT'S JAPANESE SONG HAHAHAHHA TILL 2015 when i started being addicted to kpop ehhhh

In 2015 i was searching for some AMV's of hot boisss :'D and found that one. I REALLY LIKED THE SONG AND DOWNLOADED IT ON MY PHONE AND COMPUTER and searched who is f(x), but i didn't listen to another of their songs ಠ_ಠ
in winter of 2015 i watched EXO Next Door and i forgot about normal life, thank you exo thank you <3
so i think without kpop my life would be hmm bored?

Found out KPOP with Wonder Girl's Nobody back 2011. The song and the dance step was really famous back then in PH, like it was everyone's national anthem LMAO I even memorized the steps it's not that hard but ya know what I mean for a non kpop fan. edit: I almost forgot the holy I Dont' Care and Fire of 2NE1 LOL I still remember how famous they were here in PH. Then there's BIGBANG's Fantastic Baby another national anthem LMAO, it was played at every party you go istg even I didn't like kpop back then I keep singing this song. 2014 I found it catchy so I searched BB's songs and found Bad Boy & Let's not Fall in Love soooo good ♥u♥ but I got tired of kpop agian LMAO. Then back 2016 @MysticalPhoenix saved my life lol <3 with her posting TWICE's Cheer Up and I was like omfg that MV is sooo my type *.* I memorized TWICE's members instantly because of the different member character set up lol and the rest is history lmao. My music library is now filled with kpop songs T^T I deleted alot of english songs RIP

In 2011, I was watching Hetalia videos on YouTube. One of the videos I came across had the Hetalia characters dancing to Ring Ding Dong by SHINee. So, I looked up the song, and fell in love with SHINee, and have been hooked on Kpop ever since.

Before I was introduced to KPOP, I was always listening to English music. I never even knew that KPOP existed. During a trip to a baseball game, my friend introduced me to a KPOP video. That video was Super Junior's Sorry Sorry. That was the start of it all. I don't remember how deeply I got into KPOP but that is all I listen to ever since. It wasn't that day that I search around for more KPOP but the games I played, also had KPOP as well. Now, I've downloaded about 500+ kpop songs over the last couple of years.
