Carl, it is good to see your comment and know you are still here. I am sucking up all the old music from a time when melodies were unique and talented musicians were employed to put down a track. Bless-Up in this April 2024!! 🙂
A great calypso with a topic of social relevance in todays society from 1977, that is celebrated and viewed as normal, which in my opinion is abnormal to say the least (with all due respect)..Wow how times have changed...Merchant was certainly a gifted lyricist and Calypsonian. Rest Peacefully Brother
I must add my memory of Merchant & performing on the same stage with Merchant he also composed two calypsos for me & I sang some background vocals in some of Merchant renditions. Merchant was sk Gifted & the story of how he ended up singing on stage is very interesting. 😆 I could see his slim framed body right now & he loved to wear black his attire was very admirable. Happy Birthday 🎂 Up in Heaven Merchant! aka (Merchie) 👑🎶 🎶 🎸 🎸 🇹🇹 ❤🇺🇸 👑.Singing Dianne!
Singing Dianne i absolutely LOVED your song (You got to give away) those memories i cherish…I had a BIG CRUSH on you, when i was little i must admit….You were so BEAUTIFUL & SEXY !! MUCH LOVE, Martyjayy
Dennis Franklyn Williams a.k.a Merchant (1947-1999). His breakthrough calypso. Trivia: In case you have forgotten this was the name of a film with comedian Redd Foxx Norman Is That You (1976)
The impact of music on a culture. This song played every day on the radio for many years. It was an ever popular song. As a result From 1977 to today, no one in St. Vincent and the Grenadines have named their boy child Norman. Because of this song Prover me wrong find a boy child in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, with the name Norman that was born after 1977.
I am so sorry, but I have to laugh. I am trying to picture Norman or Norma whichever works better. In 2023, Norman was way ahead of his time. He must have known what was coming down the pipes. A dress, a wig and plum red lipstick.
I am starting to believe that Norman was in fact a real person because Lord Nelson have a song about Norman also. If anyone can confirm this leave a comment.
I know The Mighty Sparrow had a song entitled "Norman" otherwise known as "Is Norman Do That" (updated version from 1998). Merchant's version was based on the Redd Foxx film from 1976. Sparrow song was originally released in 1964. I can't say about Lord Nelson's song though sorry. Somebody else may be able to help you.
Lord Merchant was certainly a very gifted Calypsonian and excellent storyteller…What he sang about has come into our modern day reality !!
Remember this like yesterday. I played the piano on this one, arranged by Ed Watson. 4:27

I never would've guessed. Man, you should write a book! Always an honor to work with you.
Great work on this one. This is a classic, and the piano stands out clearly.

Sparrow recorded “Norman” first.
You're so right. He had a "sequel" about a fight between Sugar Bum Bum Audrey and Norman.🙂
@shjakes I now remember!!! The song is "Norman & Audrey" (1979) by Nelson. It just come back to me. I also have it on cassette
Wearing a tight tight pants and a handbag in his hand, I say no this ain’t true, and he’s wearing lipstick too? Colin is that you?
